Job Description:

SUMMARY

The Department of Natural Resources and Culture’s mission is to research, monitor, assess, manage, conserve, protect, enhance, utilize, and restore the cultural and natural resources within the Tribes’ area of interest. Natural resources are cultural resources, and many of the Tribe’s values, meanings, and identities are closely linked with features of this landscape. The cultural and environmental programs within the DNRC work to perpetuate the culture of the Tribes by protecting, preserving, and upholding the Tribes’ heritage and lifeways.

 

Under the direction of the Cultural Stewardship Manager, this position will assist in developing and implementing activities that support the continued expression and continuity of Tribal culture and stewardship. The position will coordinate and support the development and implementation of all aspects of cultural knowledge transfer that include: planning cultural awareness and outreach programs to educate Tribal members and the surrounding community about Tribal culture. Also, this position will assist other Natural Resources and Culture staff with stewardship and resource protection related activities.

 

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Enrich the lives of Tribal citizens and the surrounding community by providing cultural awareness and outreach through newsletter articles, Tribal presentations, cultural activities, and other appropriate communications.
  • Aid in the development and implementation of cultural awareness and education programs for the Tribal community ranging from baby basket to one’s journey ceremony.
  • Coordinate events/activities: works in collaboration with many programs and departments, including for event preparations, education, communications, digital, creative services, public interface, activity development, and assistance in security and facilities.
  • Assist in the facilitation of the inclusion of CTCLUSI Culture in all aspects of the Tribal Government.
  • Assist in collections management where needed, such as for coordination of cultural material donations, communicating with the Tribal community or public on exhibits, etc.
  • Undertake trainings to expand expertise and maintain credentials, as well at attend conferences and meetings relevant to the program.
  • Support the Natural Resources and Culture Department in any stewardship and protection as directed.
  • Demonstrate cultural sensitivity and responsiveness to varying cultural lifeways at the family level and at the community level.
  • Maintain confidential records pertaining to Tribal culture, as well as any implementation policy per the Curations Management Plan and Tribal code(s).
  • Provide input for grants, reports, permits, or Environmental Site Assessments and/or NEPA EA/EIS review as needed and directed.
  • Assist with duties associated with Culture Committee (Tribal Codes: 7-5 & 7-14), Curations Management Team, and other relevant working groups for projects, activities, events, and exhibits.
  • Work various special projects as assigned by the Director and Assistant Director or the Chief Executive Officer.

  • Must be able to walk, talk, hear, use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Requires the ability to manage moderate levels of stress arising from schedules, workload, etc.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS & ENVIRONMENT

  • Work effectively in a team environment with a diverse variety of technical, professional, and administrative staff.
  • Work effectively in a negotiating environment where others may have diverse and competing interests and may be uncooperative or adversarial.
  • Both outdoor and office environments: may require the ability to maneuver in various conditions, including inclement weather, at various hours and days of the week.
  • Moderate noise level with frequent interruptions and distractions.
  • Requires occasionally irregular working schedules around tides, other cycles or events, evening and weekend meetings, out-of-area travel for meetings, conferences, workshops, training, etc.
  • Occasional travel and work in a fast-paced environment.

Experience and Skills:

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 25 years of age per vehicle use policy.
  • Valid Oregon driver’s license, adequate transportation, and eligibility to operate GSA vehicles required. This position may include providing transportation for Native and non-Native American clients in tribally owned or the employee’s private motor vehicle(s).
  • Combination of education, experience, and training that demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the above described activities and responsibilities.
  • Strong Tribal community event organizing skills or demonstrated success in organizing, strategizing, and following through on organizing events.
  • Ability to build relationships with families and the community.
  • Working knowledge of computer software, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Publisher.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively with federal, state, county, and local governments, and the ability to work well with Tribal members, the general public, private landowners, and stakeholder organizations in a courteous, professional, and efficient manner.
  • Must be willing to complete First Aid/CPR training and Food Handler’s Card as arranged by the Tribes.
  • Must maintain professionalism in absolutely all interactions.
  • Must possess reasonable ability to communicate in English.
  • This position is subject to pre-employment drug testing.
  • This is a covered position which requires background check that includes fingerprinting.
  • Must have employment eligibility in the U.S.
  • Indian preference will be observed in the hiring process.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate’s Degree
  • Experience working with a Tribal community
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw culture
  • Experience with graphic design software
  • Experience or interest in assisting in trailering canoes/small boats.
