SUMMARY
The Camp Director leads the planning, coordination, and delivery of
culturally grounded camp experiences for Tribal youth and families.
This position ensures that every camp, whether day, overnight, or
retreat, offers a safe, welcoming space that deepens connections to
culture, community, and the environment. Working in close partnership
with Tribal elders, cultural educators, and community partners, the
Camp Director weaves traditional teachings, heritage languages, and
environmental stewardship into engaging, age-appropriate programs that
promote wellness, leadership, and lifelong learning.
PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Plans, organizes, and leads all aspects of the Tribe’s camp
programs, including day camps, overnight camps, cultural retreats,
and other youth-centered events.
- Develops camp curricula rooted in Tribal values, traditions,
language, and outdoor skills.
- Recruits, trains, and supervises camp staff, counselors,
volunteers, and cultural teachers to ensure high-quality programming
and participant safety.
- Partners with elders, cultural leaders, and other Tribal
departments to weave traditional knowledge into daily camp activities.
- Maintains a strong culture of safety by implementing health,
emergency, and risk management procedures; completes and files all
required documentation.
- Manages camp budgets, supplies, and equipment, ensuring resources
are used efficiently and responsibly.
- Fosters a positive and respectful camp community through proactive
behavior support, conflict resolution, and youth mentorship.
- Communicates effectively with families, Tribal leadership, and
other stakeholders before, during, and after camp sessions.
- Coordinates logistics for transportation, meals, and housing (when applicable).
- Gathers participant feedback and prepares evaluations to guide
continuous improvement and future program planning.
- Ensures all activities are inclusive, culturally responsive and
aligned with the Tribal goals for youth wellness, cultural identity,
and leadership development.
- Works collaboratively across teams and with Tribal members,
families, and community partners while modeling professionalism and respect.
- Other duties as assigned.
LEVEL OF AUTHORITY & RESTRICTIONS
- Supervises a small team or group of individuals, with authority
over budgets, in decision-making, task delegation, and personnel.
PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS
- Ability to manage moderate levels of stress arising from
schedules, workload, and diverse or adversarial stakeholders.
- Must be able to walk, talk, hear, use hands to handle objects,
tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
- Vision abilities include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- May be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 40 pounds.
- Must be able to stand, walk, reach, and climb or balance as needed
for camp activities.
WORKING CONDITIONS & ENVIRONMENT
- Will require working nights and/or weekends.
- Moderate noise level with frequent interruptions and distractions.
- Occasionally exposed to variable weather conditions.
- May work and reside in a remote outdoor camp setting, including
overnight stays in tents or other temporary accommodations for the
duration of camp programming.
- Must be willing and able to travel both locally and within the
CTCLUSI service area.
