Job Description:

SUMMARY

The mission of the CTCLUSI Education Department is dedicated to nurturing the holistic development of our tribal members, with a special focus on our youth. We aim to weave our rich cultural heritage and traditions into educational programs, fostering an environment of learning that is deeply rooted in our ancestral knowledge and practices. Through collaborative, experiential, and interactive learning opportunities, we strive to empower each member with the skills, knowledge, and cultural grounding necessary to thrive in the contemporary world while holding steadfast to the traditions that define us as a people. Our mission embodies the seamless integration of cultural enrichment, academic advancement, and social development to build a resilient, knowledgeable, and culturally anchored tribal community.

 

Under the guidance of the Director of Education, the Educational Outreach Coordinator is key in planning, coordinating, and implementing educational services to support tribal students kindergarten through 12th grade. This role emphasizes the development of prevention and intervention programs for youth at risk of substance abuse, depression, and/or suicide, while enhancing cultural connectivity and addressing educational and health disparities within the 5-county service area. This is employment opportunity is funded by a 5-year SAMHSHA grant, until September 30th, 2027, with the Education Department’s intent to renew further support to fund this position.

PRINCIPAL ACTIVITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct comprehensive needs assessments to identify educational gaps and opportunities for Tribal youth and develop a Tribal Action Plan addressing these needs with a focus on cultural identity, mental health, and substance abuse prevention.
  • Oversee two Education Outreach Advocates, whether on-call or contractual staff members, to engage tribal families and students in outreach and programming efforts.
  • Actively collaborate with various stakeholders, including GONA (Gathering of Native Americans), ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences), and Project Venture, to facilitate events that bring together tribal youth and adults. These events aim to promote cultural awareness, healing, and community resilience.
  • Engage with CTCLUSI departments, Tribal Youth Council, and community members for effective program implementation and feedback, ensuring progressive student support throughout the 5-county service area.
  • Collaborate with external partners for coordinated activities and shared resources, enhancing the reach and impact of educational programs.
  • Monitor and evaluate program effectiveness, adapting strategies based on quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Participate in policy and procedure development, ensuring alignment with tribal traditions and best practices.
  • Manage program budgets and secure additional funding through grants and proposals.
  • Perform other related duties as required by the Department of Education.

PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS

  • Must be able to walk, talk, hear, use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls, and reach with hands and arms.
  • Vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
  • May be required to push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 40 pounds.
  • Requires the ability to manage moderate levels of stress arising from schedules, workload, etc.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS & ENVIRONMENT

  • Work effectively in a team environment with a diverse variety of technical, professional, and administrative staff.
  • Work effectively in a negotiating environment where others may have diverse and competing interests and may be uncooperative or adversarial.
  • Both outdoor and office environments: may require the ability to maneuver in various conditions, including inclement weather, at various hours and days of the week.
  • Moderate noise level with frequent interruptions and distractions.
  • Requires occasionally irregular working schedules around tides, other cycles or events, evening and weekend meetings, out-of-area travel for meetings, conferences, workshops, trainings, etc.
  • Occasional travel and work in a fast-paced environment.

Experience and Skills:

MINIMUM JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Must be at least 25 years of age in order to operate Tribal vehicles and transport Tribal community.
  • Must have experience working with, mentoring and/or working directly with youth.
  • Knowledge of behavior patterns of youth is desirable.
  • Ability to build relationships with the youth, families and community
  • Working knowledge of computer software, such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, and Publisher.
  • Valid driver’s license, adequate transportation, and eligibility to operate GSA vehicles required. This position may include providing transportation for Native and non-Native American clients in Tribally-owned motor vehicles.
  • Oral and written communication skills for a variety of audiences are important to the position.
  • Must be willing to complete First Aid/CPR training and Food Handler’s Card as arranged by the Tribe.
  • Must maintain professionalism in absolutely all interactions.
  • Must possess reasonable ability to communicate in English.
  • This is a Covered position and is subject to pre-employment drug testing and criminal history background check, which includes fingerprinting.
  • Must have employment eligibility in the United States.
  • Maintain appearance standards as outlined in CTCLUSI policies.
  • Indian preference will be observed in the hiring process.

 

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND SKILLS

  • Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum of three years of experience in educational program coordination, preferably within a tribal community.
